$ man funroll-loops
A small, affectionate, and occasionally cruel archive about the people who compile their entire operating system from scratch and then tell you about it.
What is this place
funroll-loops.org is a tribute and a roast — a static archive dedicated to the loud, proud, and slightly unhinged community that built their personalities around a particular Linux distribution. It collects quotes, observations, threads, and field notes about Gentoo users, ricers, source-based zealots, and the eternal pursuit of one extra frame per second.
The original funroll-loops.org appeared in the mid-2000s as
an anonymous shrine to overheard quotes from Slashdot, the Gentoo forums,
and IRC. This project is a respectful redesign — same spirit,
modern bones — built as a static site so it loads faster than your
kernel boots.
Why "funroll-loops"
-funroll-loops is a GCC compiler flag that tells the
compiler to unroll loops to avoid branching overhead. In 2003 it was
legendary among optimization enthusiasts who copy-pasted it into
/etc/portage/make.conf alongside -O3,
-march=native, and any other flag they read about on the
forums that morning. Most of the time it made things worse. Almost
always, the user could not measure the difference. Almost always, they
recommended it to others anyway.
That, in eight characters, is the soul of this site.
What you'll find here
- Real quotes from real Gentoo, Linux, and Debian threads — kept verbatim, sometimes bolded when especially audacious.
- Observations on the broader culture of source-based distributions, the optimization arms race, and the good-faith arguments behind it.
- Posts grouped by category — Gentoo, Debian, Linux — and indexed by author so you can binge a single voice.
- No tracking, no ads, no cookies, no JS frameworks compiled with their own private CFLAGS. Just static HTML.
What this site is not
This site is not a Gentoo hate page. Most of us here have, at some
point, also recompiled glibc for fun. We just think it's
funny. The targets of the satire are usually only the loudest 2% — the
rest of the Gentoo community has always been thoughtful, technical, and
helpful. If anything, this is a love letter dressed up as a roast.
How it's built
Static site, generated with Astro and Tailwind, content fetched at build time from a headless API. Hosted on a tiny VM somewhere. The whole thing weighs less than the patches you applied to your last kernel rebuild.

Reaching us
There is no contact form. There is no newsletter. There is no comments
section. The original spirit of the site was always: read it,
laugh, close the tab, get back to work. We're keeping that.
If you really need to reach the maintainer, dig around — we're not
hard to find at funroll-loops.org.
"I find it suprising no one has mentioned the fact that Gentoo the only mainstream distro that uses gcc3 for everything." — anon, 2004
